If you suffer from seasonal allergies, pollen is not your friend. And when that pollen count spikes, in comes the sneezing, itchy watery eyes, sinus headaches – the list goes on. While you can’t stop Mother Nature from doing her thing, you can most certainly control the environment inside your home. Here are tips on how you can make your home a pollen-free zone.

Keep Your Car in the Garage. Every time you touch the exterior of your car, you spread pollen everywhere inside the car. During allergy season, keep the windows up and keep a stash of sanitary wipes so you can wipe your hands after touching a pollen-covered door handle, trunk, window, you get the picture. No garage? Just give your car a quick rinse to remove any pollen build-up, as needed.

Implement a “No Shoes” Rule. Every time you wear shoes inside your home, you are tracking anything from the outside indoors. Make sure to wipe your shoes on a mat placed at your front door and remove your shoes before walking through your home.

Wash Your Hair. Did you know that your hair can be a pollen magnet? To avoid having pollen-covered pillows, wash your hair before bed. Don’t want to wash every day? When you are outside, wear a hat, bandana or hair wrap.

Keep Indoor-Outdoor Pets Clean. To keep your pet from tracking pollen indoors, give it a good brushing and wipe their paws before entering the house. It is also a good idea to rinse the brush immediately after brushing your furry friend.

Empty Your Vacuum Outdoors. Always empty your vacuum outdoors to keep unwanted pollutants from spreading through your home.

Keep the Windows and Doors Shut. While it is tempting to enjoy the fresh air of a cooler season, open windows and doors allow lots of pollen to enter your home. Keep them closed and keep the AC running.

Change Your AC Filters Regularly. One of the easiest ways to prevent pollen and other pollutants from entering your home is to regularly change out your air filters. How often depends on the time of year, type of filter you use and whether you have pets.

Not sure how often you should change out your filters? Just ask one of the Comfort Consultants at Northeast Florida Heating & Air.

Invest in HVAC Maintenance. Regular AC tune ups will not only improve the efficiency of your HVAC system, but will also enhance your indoor air quality and keep those indoor pollen counts down. When you invest in an annual maintenance plan from Northeast Florida Heating & Air, you will benefit from quarterly or semi-annual visits to your home to thoroughly clean, check, calibrate and test your HVAC system.
